IMS Health: China Leads Emerging Pharma Markets Mar 17, 2010: IMS Health has upped its count of “pharmerging” countries to 17 high-growth pharmaceutical markets. Previously, only seven markets qualified. According to IMS Health, these 17 countries represent $90 billion of increased pharmaceutical spending during 2009-13, collectively offering 48% of the growth in the market in 2013. China is the most significant opportunity of the 17, a market that is “in a league of its own,” in the words of the healthcare consultancy company. More details...

China Pharmaceutical Market Growing at 22% Clip Mar 4, 2010: China’s life science industry is growing quickly, and most experts in the prediction industry place the rate of growth at about 20%, a very healthy number. IMS Health, a global pharmaceutical consultancy, expects slightly better results for China: 22% compound annual growth rate during 2010-2013. That compares to a 4% to 6% rate in the global market. In fact, IMS Health thinks China will be responsible for 21% of all growth in the global pharmaceutical market in the next four years. More details...

China’s Opportunity to Create Mega-Clusters Nov 17, 2009: There is a huge difference between China and the US when it comes to building “life science clusters.” The US has no strategic plan about how to create a cluster, and so the clusters grow up organically over many, many years. China, on the other hand, “declares” that an area will become a cluster, and then makes it so. China offers incentives to bring companies together, but it lacks private funding, the money that is necessary to take companies to the next stage. More details...

Novartis Says Weak IP Protection Makes India R&D Impossible Nov 12, 2009: Novartis once again said that India is not a place to do R&D because its IP laws are not strong enough to protect discoveries. In 2006, Novartis made a commitment to build a $125 million R&D facility in Hyderabad. The next year, after the company lost a patent battle over its blockbuster cancer drug, Gleevec (Glivec outside the US), Novartis reneged on the center. Last week, Novartis earmarked $1.25 billion for R&D activity in China. More details...

China’s Research Output Could Surpass the US in Ten Years Nov 12, 2009: China currently ranks number two in the world for scientific research output – as measured by the number of scholarly papers published. Its output is, in fact, only one-third that of the US: 112,000 papers last year for China versus 340,000 for the US. Those statistics, however, obscure the fact that China is catching up quickly.
